Chemical control of local structure

Order to disorder

According to conventional Bragg diffraction all solids are either ordered or disordered. We propose a third alternative: some crystals can be disordered on average, but contain different degrees of order locally. In this project we aim to find synthetic routes to control local order during crystallization. We will use it to improve functional properties properties such as gas sorption, or even create new properties by selectively breaking material symmetries.
